The Counselling Experience

Janice Shigemi Registered Psychologist Calgary

Psychologists follow a strict code of professional ethics and are regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists.  We aim to provide a supportive environment to help you talk openly and confidentially about your concerns and feelings.  Psychotherapy is a collaborative effort and therapeutic approaches are individually tailored.

Counselling session are typically 50 minutes in length and longer sessions are made available as needed.  In your initial session it is my job to:

  • Provide a safe and comfortable setting for you to voice your concerns

  • Listen without judgment and gather pertinent background information

  • Assess your presenting issues, intervening factors and the impacts of distress

  • Provide you with a basic understanding of what to expect from initial stages of treatment/therapy

  • Answer any questions you may have

In addition to the above you can expect one or more of the following during the course of therapy:

  • identification of thoughts and patterns of behaviour that are intervening with your health and well-being

  • a deeper awareness of the connection between mind and body and an increased understanding of the role the nervous system plays in stress

  • the development of healthier coping techniques in response to stressors

  • Exposure to resources and exercises to further enhance learning (i.e. reading material and experiential exercises)
