Working with Children

“There are no happy endings.
Endings are the saddest part,
So just give me a happy middle
And a very happy start.”

-Shel Silverstein, Every Thing on It

Many situations arise early on in life that can cause a parent concern.  Sleep disturbance, school anxiety, separation and divorce, learning problems, bullying and depression are examples of common issues that result in parents seeking the guidance of a trained professional.  If you are bringing your child to therapy please be prepared to be a part of the process, especially at the outset where it is necessary to assess the existing relationships and strengths in order to best establish goals.  In the cases of very young children (under the age of 6), parents are often the biggest participants in therapy as they become the agents of change for their offspring.  The limits to confidentiality are openly discussed with children and parents present, and particularly focussed on in the case of adolescents and mature minors (please refer to the section on Informed Consent and Limits to Confidentiality)

Please note that in order for a child to be seen by a psychologist consent is required from both legal guardians (for details and exceptions please refer to College of Alberta Psychologists).
